What we’re about
We are the Cornwall and Devon group of the Long Distance Walkers Association. 2022 was the group's 40th anniversary of providing a regular calendar of walks all over Devon and Cornwall.
We run monthly social walks of around 20 miles (the LDWA does what it says on the tin) and from time to time shorter social walks of around 12 miles, aimed at people who might be thinking of joining and want to get a taste of what longer distance walking is like.
We walk at a reasonable pace - about 3 mph/5 kph. We stop for coffee and lunch. We don’t leave people behind! The average number of people on our walks is usually about 17.
All our social walks are led by experienced walkers, who will have walked the route beforehand, and are capable of navigating the more remote parts of the peninsula (think Dartmoor, Exmoor, Bodmin Moor) on those days when the weather comes in and visibility is poor.
Whilst we ensure you won't get lost or left behind, we do ask that you bring waterproof clothing, good footwear, and some food & drink. You will be walking for a minimum of five hours (say), and as we all know, there's a lot of rain in these parts, so being able to stay warm, dry, fed and watered is pretty important to people's safety and well-being.
We also organize three Challenge events during the year. A Challenge event is (typically) 15 miles or 23 or 30 miles, done at your own pace, and with checkpoints where you are fed, watered, and very occasionally, ferried back to the start if you've twisted an ankle or something like that.
You can see a map of our upcoming walks here.
Would you like to join us on a couple of no obligation, longer distance walks? we're a friendly group and you will be made very welcome!
