Let’s start off the new year with a resolution that will decrease our chance of developing dementia by 46 percent. Neuroscientists call the strategy increasing *cognitive reserve .* By continually learning, we increase our [neural connections](https://human-memory.net/brain-neurons-synapses/) so that when one [synapse](https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=9246) fails, others come into play instead, demonstrating our brains’ *[neuroplasticity](https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-neuroplasticity-definition-depression-quiz.html),* or ability to strengthen neural connections and synapses. This neuroplasticity keeps the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease from expressing themselves and playing havoc with our everyday life. Learning is like a mental bank account. The more synapses you have strengthened and developed by challenging your brain to keep learning, the more your neurons will be able to redirect their messages when a synapse fails.

So, once a month we will listen to 10 minute summary on an agreed upon book and discuss key points.
