FREE Accessible & Inclusive Activity Creative & Expressive Dance Nottingham

We start with tea, biscuits & a catch-up before an inclusive and supportive participatory movement and dance session with themes inspired by the seasons, elements and nature. The sessions are free, or you pay what you can. No previous experience in dance is required, and all our sessions include people of different backgrounds and abilities.
We aim to lift your mood, move your body, meet new people and enjoy your time with us.

You do not require any special equipment but expect to get warm, so wearing layers, trainers, or flexible shoes is a good idea.

The Freedom to Explore project provides accessible & inclusive dance, drumming, music, singing & art sessions daily, Monday to Friday, between 10:45 and 12:45hrs, including additional time for refreshments and socialising in a warm space. We endeavour to be participant lead and work with a steering group of local adults to help us engage and retain people in healthy creative activities. Professionals and participants can experience the activities and meet our team anytime.
Arts Council England Lottery Fund funds us until February 2023; all our sessions are free on entry (donations are always welcome), including transport on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for those who would not otherwise be able to reach the project. To engage the most isolated and needing the benefits of a healthier creative community. We have secured accessible transport from My Journey CIC, who will collect participants and return them home for people otherwise unable to leave home can attend with emotional and physical support.
During school holidays, our activities are accessible to families; the intergenerational activities take place in Ward 6 Sneinton / St Anns area from the 11th to the 14th of April, concluding with a sharing of Arts, music and dance with our local community, support agencies & residents. We prioritise LGBTQ+ families and families with young carers who might appreciate a smaller, safer space with inclusive creative experiences.
Over the year, approximately six weeks will follow different environmental themes that inspire each session, culminating in community sharing. People can access the sessions at any point within the term and attend as and when they choose. Participants can self-refer or be supported to attend. Our next term commences on Monday, 24th of April, and follows the timetable on the flyer. We are wheelchair-accessible and welcome Adults of all ages, abilities and experiences. Please refrain from referring people likely to cause fear, anxiety or distress to others.
I researched how to engage specific groups in creative dance as part of a research residency at FABRIC. Using this knowledge and understanding, I successfully engage adults living with Parkinson's, Dementia, Alzheimer's, Cerebral Palsy, learning disabilities, MS, ME and Stroke survivors, and wheelchair users into expressive dance and movement sessions for improved emotional and physical well-being.
We choose not to perform; however, we hope the steering group will choose to participate in local events such as Light Night, Pride and Carnival.
