water-link is a Belgian utility company that plays a vital role in providing safe, clean and reliable drinking water in Antwerp. Over the past decade, water-link replaced analog water meters with a digital version with the ability to send alarms, receive requests for automated operations and provide insightful IoT data. In partnership with delaware, they built a modern data platform powered by the Databricks Lakehouse paradigm and hosted on Azure.
At the core of the Lakehouse platform lies an automated rule engine that processes the incoming alarms and other daily metrics without any human interaction. As such, Databricks Lakehouse acts as the central component that notifies all involved parties to take swift action when a problem arises in the drinking water supply. In this session, we’ll give you more information about this groundbreaking solution.
water-link’s water landscape requires a smart, sustainable approach to ensure continued availability. The digital meter is already making a difference for their customers, employees, and how they collaborate with stakeholders and society in general. This truely makes them pioneers in Flanders.
In this session Maarten Herthoge will walk you through the various use cases realised and the key lessons learned on delivering value with IoT.

Combining functional and technical expertise in the Microsoft (Azure) ecosystem with a background in business economics, financial controlling and computer science engineering, he strives to turn data into an intelligent asset. He has a proven track record of almost 10 years in advising and managing complex data projects ranging from operationalizing AI solutions to tackling multi-million IoT device or multi-TB use cases. # TempDB Contention: How to Identify and Resolve it

In SQL Server 2022, there is a huge misconception that TempDB contention is completely resolved. This is NOT true.
Attend this session to find out why and what needs to be addressed in TempDB for better performance.
In this session, I’ll show you how contention on TempDB occurs and how to identify when it occurs. I’ll explore methods to analyze and resolve contention.

Finally, I’ll show you a demo on how to mitigate each of the contention types and how it varies across SQL Server versions 2019 and 2022. By the end of this session, you will be able to address and resolve TempDB contention promptly, ensuring optimal TempDB performance in your SQL Server.

From SQL to KQL via Azure Data Explorer

Session:

We all know (and love) our SQL, the Structured Query Language. Some of us have been writing SQL queries for decades. But there's a relatively new kid on the block: KQL, the Kusto Query Language. A powerful tool to explore data, discover patterns and anomalies, even analyze streaming data and time series. It's also the language used to query the Azure log databases and your IoT sensor data.

In this session you'll get to know the most important elements of KQL: tables, queries and the pipe, visualizations and dashboards. We'll see what it has in common with SQL and what the differences are. We'll learn our ways to get from SQL to KQL.

One possible tool of choice to get going with KQL is ADX, the Azure Data Explorer (others are the KQL extension for Azure Data Studio or the Kusto.Explorer). For the practical parts of this session we'll use ADX with the free cluster option as our environment to ingest, analyze and visualize our data.
