Temple Data Science Community (TDSC) is a student organization in the Computer & Information Sciences department that focuses on interdisciplinary data science and its applications. Through workshops, guest speakers, networking events, and social events, we create a community to bring together all students interested in data science, regardless of their major. Instagram is @tu_dsc.
Speakers:
John Solly, https://x.com/_jsolly, Software Engineer @HazardHub (A Guidewire Offering): “From Data to Maps: Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Geospatial Data Science and Visualization”. This talk will explore the challenges data scientists face when working with geospatial data. From managing projections and spatial autocorrelation to overcoming map visualization hurdles like color selection and scale, you'll learn how to avoid common mistakes and improve your geospatial analysis. Join us for practical tips and real-world insights from over a decade of experience in the field.
Speaker bio: With over a decade of experience in the geospatial industry, I specialize in developing and scaling geospatial applications that transform complex data into actionable insights. As a Software Engineer at HazardHub (A Guidewire Offering), I work on infrastructure and application development, helping organizations make data-driven decisions through geospatial analysis. My expertise spans proprietary platforms like Esri and Mapbox and open-source technologies such as OpenLayers, GeoServer, and GDAL. I’m passionate about leveraging geospatial data science to drive innovation and solve real-world problems.
Jake Rozran, https://jakelearnsdatascience.com, Adjunct Professor @ Villanova and Data Scientist @ Comcast: “How to use Data for Evil - a how-to guide on misleading with data”. Data is used and abused often. As Mark Twain said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." This presentation will go over, satirically, how to mislead using data. It will get into improper data visualization, suspicious predictions, and a conversation on big data and surveillance.
Speaker bio: Jake Rozran is an Adjunct Professor at Villanova, teaching undergraduates how to program, wrangle data, visualize data, and analyze data in R, and a manager of a data science team at Comcast, where he and the team work on better serving customers when they call in with network issues. Outside of work, he spends a lot of time trying to better understand finance and crypto markets through data. Passionate about data science and statistics for the last 10+ years, he holds his masters of applied statistics from Villanova and his undergraduate degree from Drexel. Outside of data, he lives with his wife and two children in Havertown, PA.
🚊🚙 We will follow up with parking and transit information couple days before the event. Please note, by RSVPing this event you agree to our Code of conduct
