Subtext and Emotional Connection
with Georgi Chulkov

A character says something. Your character responds. Before you know it, you're stuck in an argument, a meaningless negotiation, or irrelevant smalltalk while you figure out what this scene should be about.

On and off the stage, very often what is being said is far less meaningful than how it is being said, and the true underlying message hides just under what the surface-level message. This is subtext.

In this workshop, we will sllloooowwww dooooowwwwnnnn and take the time to truly listen to our scene partner, sense what they are actually trying to tell us without words or under the words, and react based on that subtext. This will quickly and inevitably build a genuine emotional connection between the characters and allow our audience to care about them. The workshop will be heavily tuned towards sidecoaching and practical scenework.

Level

Suitable for improvisers of all levels. Perfect for those who tend to play (too) fast and funny, and want to expand their range!

About the teacher

Georgi has been passionate about improv ever since discovering the artform in 2017. He founded The Blue Couch improv group a year later, where he serves as creative director and regularly performs longform shows. He is a frequent workshop facilitator at the Rice Cookie Improv community in Munich. In 2024 he co-founded Edge Improv Lab in order to share his knowledge and experience with the world. Also in 2024 he co-founded The Mind Meld, a platform that enables improvisers from different local groups and communities to play together. You can also find him every year at the Sofia Improv Festival.

Important things to know

Please bring non-slip socks or a second pair of shoes. We are not allowed to use our street shoes in the venue, and the floor can be slippery. We highly recommend comfortable clothes which allow for movement and possibly sitting on the floor.

We ask that you do not take photos or videos during the session.

The workshop is in English.

You may cancel for a full refund until two weeks before the start. Cancellation after that date is not possible.
