Greetings once again! Earlier in 2024, this group did something pretty special. We read through the Hobbit and each volume of Lord of the Rings. We met to discuss each book and share our experience of reading it with one another. And we also watched each corresponding movie (with snacks); once at a sweet art gallery, once in one of Denver's fantastic public libraries, and we even were lucky enough to see Two Towers in its 20th anniversary return the theaters! Throughout it all, I especially appreciated the hearing which parts of these books spoke to each one of us and why, and the shared sense of diving into something special together.
Now after a small break, we are ready to tackle the White Whale. The book that many try, but few will conquer. The beautiful backstory of LoTR, and perhaps the true life work of Professor Tolkein's: The Silmarillion. Begin reading now, friends, and let's gather on Sunday, Dec 15th at 1:00-3:00pm (Barquentine Brewing) to discuss roughly the first third of the book: Ainulindale and the Quenta Silmarillion. That's through chapter 13. We'll be in the barrel room to the right and behind the bar. Barquentine is located within the Edgewater Marketplace. We'll spend the first 30 minutes munching munchables, drinking drinks, and getting to know one another. Then, we'll dive into our thoughts, feelings, and observations of the book! If you didn't join us for LoTR, or came once or twice, or are finding us for the firs time - you are welcome.
I also highly recommend checking out the Prancing Pony Podcast. In it, 2 Tolkein superfans walk through each chapter of the Silmarillion, with added insights and lots of good humor. There's also a Prancing Pony page on Facebook. I've only dabbled, but have found the podcast and community to be quite lovely and informative.
