Wicked is a prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and its film adaptation, The Wizard of Oz (1939). The musical is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It tells the story of Elphaba, a young woman with emerald-green skin who is smart, fiery, and misunderstood, and Glinda, a popular blonde who is born into luxury and privilege. Their rivalry turns into an unlikely friendship, but the world decides to call one "good" and the other "wicked".
