What we’re about
Welcome to the Düsseldorf Book Club!
*Who is the club for?*
Short answer: anyone who wants to join. If you are unsure that the book club is for you, check if one of the situations below sounds familiar:
- you read a book and wish all your friends would drop everything and read it too, so you can discuss it;
- you find yourself stuck reading very similar books and wonder what others are reading and if you are missing something exciting;
- you are curious about what the author meant by a particular passage and if other people interpret the text in the same way;
- you just want to spend a couple of hours talking about more than the weather.
*How does it work?*
1. We meet each month to discuss a book that has been selected by the group. If you recently loved a book, then pitch it to the group and we might select it.
2. The meeting starts with the person who recommended the book saying a few words about why they chose it.
3. We then discuss what stood out in the book for us: both positive and negative comments are welcome. There are no limits to the discussion - you don't need to be a literary critic to participate. Usually this part of the meeting lasts about 1.5 hours, but it varies depending on the book. You don't have to finish the book to come to the club, but you should be warned that we will reveal spoilers during the discussion.
4. Once the book discussion is done, we talk about potential new books to read next month and make our choice.
5. Those who want to can stay behind for drinks and miscellaneous conversations.
*Where do we meet?*
Our Saturday meetings take place at the International English Library (Mecumstrasse 10, 40223 Düsseldorf, first floor). They are an organization dedicated to fostering a community around books and culture, which is run by a group of volunteers. Thanks to their support, participation in the book club is free of charge. Since the library team helps us to organize the event, we hope that some of you will consider making a donation to the library (they have a donation box for anonymous contributions). Any contribution (big or small) goes towards creating a space for the exchange of ideas and improves access to English-language literature for the local community.
Our Sunday meetings take place at the Düsseldorf Central Library (Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1, 40210 Düsseldorf, first floor, "Stadtfenster" room). These meetings are intended only for people who did not get a place in the Saturday meetings. Since we want to read the same books, the Sunday group reads the books which were selected by the Saturday group. We are very grateful to the Central Library for hosting us completely free of charge!

Help us make the event available to as many people as possible. If you know that you cannot attend or actually read the book, please change your RSVP status as soon as you know (at the latest a week in advance). If you miss 3 meetings that you are registered for or deregister last minute on a regular basis, we may prioritize other members and put you on a waiting list.
