Join Janet Gawthrop and Audrey Liese on this 1/2 day hike to cover both the Madera Open Space and the best of the main Hillside Natural Area immediately to the south.
This trip will feature a public open space with a history of volunteer restoration work. Questions about restoration work on Hillside Natural Area should go to Audrey, a regular weed warrior and organizer of volunteers on HNA. Janet will identify plants, and both will be happy to discuss the various alternative plans for restoration of HNA, fire prevention, and why these 2 goals are not mutually exclusive.
We will wind up the official field trip around 1 pm for an outdoor picnic-style potluck, weather permitting. For those interested in exploring a bit more, we can make a few other stops to talk about both plants and restoration on the way back uphill to our cars.
Directions:
For drivers, use the street address of 1590 Regency Court for the Google map pin and directions. Park on the street without blocking anyone and meet Audrey and Janet just on the other side of the guard rail at the trailhead.
For mass transit users: From El Cerrito del Norte BART station, take AC Transit # 7 bus north and uphill, continuing on the right onto Arlington to get off at Madera & Arlington. Follow Madera Street downhill, past Madera Elementary on your left, and then go down the public steps to the path across the top of Madera Open Space. Cross Madera Open Space and meet us on the other side at the end of Regency Court.
