This is the first retrospective exhibition of artworks by Edinburgh-based Everlyn Nicodemus. It includes drawings, collages, paintings and textiles from the last 40 years of the artist’s life, as well as new works created especially for this show.
Nicodemus was born in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in 1954. She is an artist, writer and curator who believes that creativity can be a form of healing. Her joyful artworks are a powerful response to the global oppression of women, the profound impact of racism and her personal trauma and recovery. Nicodemus’ portrayal of the human body is bold and courageous. Her work asks us to explore and question our understanding of identity, belonging and faith. Nicodemus also loves to experiment with colour and form. In her art, you can spot abstract patterns, materials and found objects from around the home.
