Hill Alert: As usual, non-assisted bikers are most welcome, but be aware of the hills on this route.
About Fletcher's Cove:
Fletcher's Cove, called by many customers "Fletcher's Boathouse", has been in this location since the 1850s and is renowned as a fishing and recreational area.
The nearby Abner Cloud House is the oldest building on the canal, dating back to 1802. After 145 years of business, the fourth generation of the Fletcher family retired in 2004, and Guest Services Incorporated, a National Park Service concessionaire, assumed responsibility for the operation of the concessions. The area surrounding the boathouse was then officially named Fletcher's Cove, though most people still call it Fletcher's Boat House.
About the C&O Canal:
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operated from 1831 until 1924 along the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. The canal's principal cargo was coal from the Allegheny Mountains.
The canal’s roots begin with George Washington’s dream of a waterway trade route. 74 locks were built.
About the Labyrinth:
One of the most interesting features in the park is the labyrinth, located towards the western end of the park. Labyrinths, which date back to ancient times, encourage contemplation on the journey from the outer edge along a circular path to the center.
The TKF Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes urban green spaces to facilitate community healing, provided funds for constructing the labyrinth and for a teak bench and a diary for visitors to use to record their experiences there.

- W&OD Trail: Arlington to Vienna (with Herndon option) -- E-bike LoversBluemont, Arlington, VA
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43436538

Note: Wednesday Rides always meet at 10:30, and we bike at 10:45!

For this Wednesday romp, we offer you a relaxed ride from Arlington to Vienna and back again (17.2 miles) along the W&OD trail. Have more time and energy? Continue on the W&OD to Reston or Herndon, 34.5 miles round trip.
Either ride is a straight shot on the W&OD requiring minimal navigation. (You should stay alert for 1 or two funky turns, however.)
If you take the shorter ride, we'll stop at the Vienna Red Caboose for our usual brown bag picnic/snack. Vienna also offers numerous dining options, including the Caboose Tavern, right off the trail.
https://caboosebrewing.com/restaurant-brewpub-vienna-va/
Riding out to the historic town of Herndon? Stop at the Herndon Caboose, and have lunch or a snack. You can also check out the Green Lizard Cycling & Coffee shop, or grab something at the bakery, or the pizzeria in town.
https://www.greenlizardcycling.com/
One optional stop, which is very popular with E-Bike Lovers, is a detour to Southblock, a smoothie and acai bowl joint off Maple Ave in Vienna.
https://south-block-juice-co.speedetab.com/venues/2398
Please charge your batteries. The ride is mostly flat, but there are a few hills along the way. Unassisted bikes are most welcome.

Please be careful on the road crossings since there are several small ones and a few busier ones. Gallows Road, for example, can be busy but it does have a traffic light to help you cross.

18.4 miles. Picnic in Takoma Park 6.2 miles in the route.Toilets are at the beginning, middle, and end of the trail. The picnic stop is in Takoma Park, 6.6 miles into the route. The route will be some 18 miles in total.
The City of Takoma Park Office of Sustainability has invited E-bike Lovers to participate in their Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration.
To celebrate this wonderful event, we will be e-biking through Takoma Park to the festival as part of the ride, starting at Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park.
The bilingual flyer for the event is available on the city's website.
Why? Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection, conservation, and sustainability. Now morphed into Earth Month for all of April, this is a special time of year to recognize the City's efforts in various areas of sustainability and commitment to our climate action goals.
Where? In the past (pre-pandemic), The City held this event at the Community Center. This year, they have received approval from Montgomery Parks to hold it in the Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park near the new playground at Houston and Kennebec Ave. (8101 Sligo Creek Pkwy, Takoma Park, MD 20912).
This festival is in a car-free area on weekends, encouraging people to come in on carbon-free means (walking, biking, rollerblading, scootering, etc).
The City will organize activities, including face painting, nature-themed arts & crafts, a guided tree walk, energy efficiency giveaways, snow cones, and lawn games.
In support of this event, E-bike Lovers is independently organizing a fantastic ride that will self-guide you to the festival, starting in Rock Creek Park.

- Peak Blooming: Hains Point, National Arboretum, and Kenilworth Aquatic GardensHaines Point , Washington , DC
The picnic is in the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens after 12.5 miles. When you arrive at the gardens (after the short dirt access road), walk your e-bike into the park. Pass the toilets and the visitors center (on your left) and go straight to the picnic area.
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a one-of-a-kind destination within Anacostia Park and it is a hidden gem in Washington, DC. The summer lotus and lily blossoms are a “must see” during their peak blooming period in July, not unlike viewing the cherry blossoms in the spring.
The picnic is 12.5 miles into the trail at the aquatic gardens for the short and longer version of the trail. We have two versions:
DC Trail 7A - E-biking from Hains Point to the Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens and National Arboretum - 33.4 miles

This new route design takes advantage of new cycling routes in DC. Please delete any old version.

To avoid the crowds, we will park at the most south-eastern parking lot all the way at the end (not at the golf course) on Hains Point.
From Hains Point, we will be biking to the Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens and the National Arboretum. The entire trip will be some 24 miles to the Aquatic Gardens. If you continue to the National Arboretum, you add a maximum of 8 miles to the trip (depending on how far you bike inside the Arboretum).
Please bring some snacks, lunch and plenty of water. Our bikes will be always in our sight. No additional locks are required to keep your bike safe on this trip.
For the E-bike Lovers group to be successful, we need to grow our membership carefully. Please feel free to invite other E-bike lovers, spread the word and let's have fun.
