Autumn Colours: Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.

Autumn looks like being a long one this year. A walk in the Forest of Dean at the end of November should still offer us some stunning colourscapes. Let’s go take a look!

We meet in the forest town of Coleford, which is just a fifty minute drive from Central Bristol. After a brief tour of the heritage and industrial archaeology of the town we head into the forest.

We will lift share and take just a few cars into the forest as parking is often busy.

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail has been inspiring awe and wonder since 1986. The trail we will follow through the forest is four and a half miles long and mostly level. There are around fifteen sculptures among the trees for us to enjoy. Names of these works of art include Cathedral, Iron Road, Heart of Stone and Searcher.

There is a visitor centre with a coffee kiosk and toilets shortly after the start of our walk.

As is our custom a historical travelogue style article based on Steve's research notes will be emailed out after the walk to help you hold on to what you have picked up from our wander through this autumnal paradise at the heart of the Forest of Dean.
