Raleigh Weekday Outdoor Activity Group

We’ll walk briskly twice around Shelley Lake, once in each direction for a total of about 4 miles, stopping to see wildlife along the way. We will pause around sunset near the eagles nest in hopes of seeing one or both of Shelley’s resident pair. On our last Shelley walk we saw 3 eagles. We’ll surely see deer and great blue herons. Option to walk only once around but best chances of successful sitings are around sunset. We should be back to the parking lot before dark but it might be a good idea to bring a flashlight. Also bring your binocs if you have them.

We'll do an 8.6 mile loop walk on the multi-use trails in Umstead. No rocks and roots, some hills. We should easily be able to do an average of 3 mph since it is on multi-use trails.

We will start in the gravel parking lot that used to be called the horse trailer parking.
Go past the visitor center, and turn left onto Maintenance Rd. Take the obligatory right turn. At the next option, fork left onto Camp Sycamore Access Rd. On google maps this parking lot is labelled Sycamore Parking Graylyn Trail. (See map with pin.) Do NOT go to the parking lot that is usually used to hike the Sycamore Trail.

This hike will be posted in another hiking group, so there will probably be more people attending than are on this RSVP list.

From US 1 Either North or South: Go East on NC 98 toward Durham at Your first intersection light Northpark Street and Carolina Ale House is on your left. Retail drive is on your right. In .7 miles turn left on Old Falls of Neuse. Go 2.7 miles across the bridge and take immediate left 12030 Old Falls of Neuse Road. Go 1/10th of a mile to parking lot
Coming from Durham: take a right on Old Falls of Neuse. Go 2.7 miles across the bridge and take immediate left 12030 Old Falls of Neuse Road. Go 1/10th of a mile to parking lot
If coming from North Raleigh from US 540: Go North Left Turn Falls of Neuse Road 3.3 to 3.4 miles Turn left on Old Falls Neuse, in 2/10th of a mile turn right at 35MPH sign and Curve Sign. 12030 Old Falls of Neuse is just before the Bridge, if you see a bicycle rental the bike guy or the dam, you have missed your turn.
There is a difference between old Falls of Neuse and Falls of Neuse.
