While the mandolin is popular today as a folk and bluegrass instrument, it has a rich history in the classical music world. In the US, mandolin orchestras were practically ubiquitous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; at their height of their popularity, nearly every town and college had one. The San Francisco Bay Area still boasts several mandolin orchestras, and is often the site of concerts by leading classical mandolin players from around the world.
