SUMMARY:
There are circa 3.4 million to 10.5 million fungi, they are worldwide in distribution and found in every habitat, from arctic waters to deep sea sediments and hypothermal vents, yet most remain to be discovered. We are in contact with fungi from the moment we take up in the morning until we fall asleep, some are of extreme benefit (Antibiotics, food, bread), to those that are pathogenic to man and plants.
Many emerging diseases are caused by fungi, resistant to treatment, and we need urgently to discover new antimicrobials
