Highland Hammock State Park is one of the 4 original State Parks and has an interesting Display about the CCC project that helped create it as a park.
Take a journey back in time to an ancient hammock, and discover endangered species and beautifully delicate ecosystemsHighlands Hammock State Park is located on the western edge of Lake Wales Ridge in Highlands and Hardee Counties in Florida. It is noted for having a greater number of rare and endemic species than any other park in the state. During the Paleolithic Era the park lands were the habitat of mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, giant ground sloths and tortoises. Indeed, mastodon tusks and a giant tortoise shell were discovered in the park in the 1930s. While the tusks were lost due to improper conservation techniques, the tortoise shell is preserved in the current park store. A look at the WPA-era mural in the Sebring Library, “Prehistoric Florida” by renowned artist Charles Knight, shows a landscape of moss-covered sand live oaks and palms that is eerily similar to areas in today’s park.
This tour will also include a visit to some large murals in the area and a stop in Avon Park.

Saturday, January 18 Scottish Highland Games in Winter Springs!
Payments are due with Reservations!
Area Scottish clans and societies gather to compete in rigorous athletic events, dancing and piping to celebrate their rich heritage at the Central Florida Scottish Highland Games. Sponsored by the Scottish-American Society of Central Florida, the Games feature such crowd favorites as Tossing the Caber, Sheaf Toss and Hammer Throw, as well as the second-largest highland dance competition in the Southeastern United States, plus five skill levels of piping competition. The Border Collies herding the Sheep was a fabulous viewing experience to see these adorable animals so disciplined in this herding event which has been going on for hundreds of years. The music of both the old-fashioned pipers and some modern groups as well capture the flavor of the Scottish Highlands. The dance lessons are led by James who is a resident of the Suntree area and a very patient teacher for these simple and fun folk dances that you can try in a small area and no kilts are required except for James. The march of the Clan’s is a colorful exhibition of Flags and outfits of a proud culture. If you’re not planning a trip to the beautiful region of the Isle of Skye or visiting Nessie in Inverness this year then this is the next best thing to experience Scotland in Central Florida. Sometimes you can watch the game of Quiddich from the Harry Potter Movies. Members $80 Guests $85 includes transportation, entrances and above described events Leave Suntree Red Ginger 8am and Cocoa 8:30am with a return around 5 pm.
