What we’re about
In the UK tradition, this isn't a swimming group, but a "dipping" group! What's a dip? It's just getting into the water! We'll take a brief (15-20 minute) dip in the ocean at Crown Beach, getting the benefits of the cold water and being in nature, and then dry off and have hot beverages and treats. That's it! Adults of all genders are welcome. For more information on safety and dipping, visit the Outdoor Swimming Society or Mental Health Swims. As your host (just a regular person who fell in love with outdoor swimming during the pandemic), I'll give a short intro on shore before the group gets into the water!
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- East Bay Dipping Society Ocean DipGrand Street & Shore Line Drive, Alameda, CA
What it is: A bi-monthly dip into the wonderfully chilly ocean at Crown Beach in Alameda!
What you need:
- Swimwear you're comfortable in
- Sunscreen
- Towel
- A treat and drink for afterwards (some like a warm beverage like tea or coffee!)
- Extras: kickboards, floaties, swim socks or flippers, swim caps, swim buoys, goggles (I will bring some extras of these items for your use!)
What we'll do:
- Brief intro
- Then we'll get in the water! It'll be cold and you may feel a sense of shock at first. and paddle, tread water, just splash around, or walk back and forth. Whatever feels comfortable for you!
FAQ:
Is the water deep?
- No. You can wade in as far as you feel comfortable; you will always have the option for your feet to touch the bottom.
What if I get too cold?
- You can just get out! No one should feel pressure to push beyond their limits of comfort and safety. That said, after the initial rush, your body may take just a minute or two to acclimate, and the water might start feeling...almost warm?
Do I have to talk to anyone?!
- As an introvert, this is an important question for me! :D Beyond saying your name, you don't have to chat if you don't want to. The water does have a habit of bringing folks together, though.
Where do I put my stuff?
- We'll have a small tent where you can stow your items; however, I recommend getting a waterproof swim buoy or drybag that will safely hold your keys and wallet. I've never had anything stolen from the beach but there's a first time for everything.
What if I want to swim?
- Fellow Meetup group Alameda Beach Open Water Swim, aka The East Bay Flounderers, swims to the orange buoys starting at 9 AM every Saturday from the same spot! They're a warm and welcoming group even if you're a beginner.
What if I have more questions?
- Please feel free to contact me here and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.
