Freeside Atlanta

Freeside is having a build-out! Freeside members get to flex their right to hack on the space infrastructure and hack Freeside itself into a collective vision. Non-members are welcome and encouraged to come and help us hack the space! We could always use extra hands for buildouts and are happy to show you around the space.

Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and fitted clothing, and be ready to get your hands dirty! Freeside has safety goggles and ear protection, but feel free to bring your own.

We will pretty much be there all day, come when you can.

Some of the projects we're focusing on include:
• Laying in dust collection for the workshop
• Sorting and storing recent donations
• Workshop cleanup and organization.
• Proving P is equal to NP.
• Squaring the circle.

Come out and hack on the space with us!

This class is designed for women who have wanted to learn how to use power tools or improve the skill you currently have. You will learn how to use a circular saw, drill, and jigsaw and leave with a completed project. To quote a friend, "I can make anything with these 3 tools." My hope is that you will have the confidence to undertake wood working projects and repairs on your own. And have some fun doing it!

Freeside Atlanta is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing a space for engineers, programmers, inventors, artists, and lunatics to collaborate. We host this meeting a couple of times a month on Tuesday so that people can check us out, chat with our members, and get together to plan projects, events, and classes.

We'll do a quick meeting to introduce everyone, we'll update folks on the progress of projects and equipment in the space, announce classes and events, and occationally feature a 10-20 minute talk by a guest lecturer on an interesting subject. Afterwards, we'll break out into a more informal open house so people can chat, take a tour, and check out some of the cool stuff around the space.

Freeside is chock full of tools that you can use to build almost anything. With these great tools comes great responsibility, so this class is meant to teach individuals who are new to woodworking how to properly operate the equipment, and also to serve as check-off for all new members (even experienced ones) who plan to use the shop.

MIG Welding for Beginners is a bimonthly class series that introduces the MIG welding process for hobbyists and home users. MIG (Metal- Inert Gas) is an arc welding process that uses wire fed from a spool to carry the arc and deposit filler metal, while shielded by an inert gas mixture of Argon and CO2. The class focuses on learning the fundamentals of safety, material prep, and tool use for welding on mild carbon steel.

In this class, you will learn how to prepare and set up a workpiece, set up and safely run the welder, and successfully join pieces of metal together. You will practice running several beads, and then weld small plates together to practice and demonstrate basic joints used in welding. Anything you weld on is yours to take home at the end of the class.

What to Wear (required):

• Long-sleeve 100% cotton button-up shirt (denim or flannel works great)
• Long work pants
• Leather or closed toed work shoes
• Hair pulled back

TIG Welding for Beginners is a class that introduces participants to the process of TIG welding at the hobbyist level. TIG stands for Tungsten-Inert Gas and is a welding process that is popular with hobbyists because it is very versatile. If it can be welded: TIG can do it.

This class will cover welding safety, machine setup, basic welding concepts, and material preparation first. Once all that is done, participants will learn about forming a weld puddle and shortly after running a bead using filler wire. Lastly the class will cover welding different types of joints.

This class only covers basic DC TIG welding and is intended to give the foundation for students to begin developing their skills. Students will leave having only practiced on mild steel but will have the fundamentals for most materials, including stainless steel. Aluminium can only be welding with AC TIG. AC TIG has more considerations but is easier to learn with a strong DC foundation, such as the one this class provides.

What to Wear (Required):

Pants made of natural fibers. No shorts or pants that will melt.

Close toed shoes.

Long hair must be tied back.

No dangling jewelry, especially around the neck.

Long sleeved shirt made of natural fibers is preferred, however a welding jacket can be provided during the class to those who wish to forego this.

Proper welding gloves and a welding hood will be provided for the duration of the class if needed.

Failure to meet these criteria may result in refusal to accept the individual into the class.

Have you ever been interested in miniatures/diorama, but have no idea where to start?

If so, this Introduction to Miniatures class is for you! During this 90 minute session, attendees will assemble their own 1:12 scale Little Free Library, along with books to place inside!

After the class ends, you’ll have your own miniature Little Free Library to take home and decorate: your very first completed piece.

Supplies to assemble your miniature and books will be provided during class, along with a list of finishing material resources and tips.
