What we’re about

The German-American Hiking Club (GAHC) is an organization of people who share an interest in a German language and culture combined with an appreciation of the great outdoors in the surroundings of metropolitan New York and New Jersey. If you would like to brush up on your German or speak German with hikers of German background, the Club welcomes you.  Since being founded in 1958, the club has scheduled one-day activities and occasional 3-4 day weekend trips or longer excursions throughout the year.  The Club schedules outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking and cross-country skiing from time to time.
German Language Initiative: Certain activities are so designated to give people a chance to chat in German. Please try to speak in German on these activities, if possible.
Registration for all hikes 24 hours before is required and hikers are strongly urged to check with the hike leader if the weather looks doubtful or the weather forecast is poor. Prior to registering for any activity, you are encouraged to discuss your capabilities with the trip leader.
There is no guest fee for participation in the first two activities and the fee thereafter is $5 per hike. A guest must participate in two hikes before becoming a member.  Membership dues are $25 annually for individuals, $35 for families.
You should always be aware of the risks involved in outdoor activities and conduct yourself accordingly. The trip leader or the German-American Hiking Club is not responsible for your safety. You are.
Suggested car-pooling fee is recommended at $.40 per mile, plus tolls, to be shared equally between all passengers and the driver.
