*MIDDAY/MIDWEEK* INNOCENT RAIL PATH: COMMONWEALTH POOL TO PORTOBELLO

Details

Come join me on this very pleasant 5 mile walk from the city to the beach.
We'll follow Edinburgh’s Innocent Rail path, Niddrie Burn, Brunstane Burn and Joppa before reaching Portobello to finish with a well earned refreshment/bite to eat.

THE INNOCENT RAILWAY

  • The Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway nicknamed “The Innocent Railway” opened in 1831 and was initially horse-drawn as steam engines were considered dangerous!
  • It earned the nickname "the Innocent Railway" due to its safety record: it carried 300 to 400 thousand passengers a year without fatalities, in an age where steam engines had a reputation as dangerous.
  • The 517 metre Innocent Railway Tunnel runs under Holyrood Park and was the first railway tunnel in Britain.
  • The railway closed in 1968 but this section re-opened as a path for walkers and cyclists in 1981.
