Hike on the AT with views and a plane wreck.
Details
This is a point-point hike on the AT from Humpback picnic area, to Humpback rocks visitor center. Along the way we will pass 3 scenic vista’s, including “the rocks,” a view of the Rockfish valley and the snow clad Wintergreen slopes, and a view from the peak of Humpback mountain(no, the rocks are not the peak!). We will also take a 200 yard bushwhack off trail to see the substantial remains of a USMC T-28 Trojan trainer aircraft that wrecked in 1964. Both pilots bailed out safely before impact.
We will stop for lunch at one of the overlooks.
Difficulty: Moderate
This hike is about 6 miles, with less than 500 feet elevation gain. The bushwhack is not terribly difficult, though you need to weave around downed trees, etc and go up/down a moderately steep slope.
Location
Carpool will meet at Teel Lane at 9:45. It is a 30 minute drive to the Humpback rocks visitor center. We will then shuttle cars up to the Picnic area to start the hike, an additional 5-10 minute drive.
Directions: take 64 West to Blue Ridge Parkway/Waynesboro exit (exit 99). R onto 250, immediate right (at the popcorn stand) onto 610, then R onto Blue Ridge Parkway. Humpback rocks visitor center will be after about 6 miles on the right.
If you would prefer to meet us at Humpback rocks VS, let me know in the comment section & and we will meet you there.

As you hike and your body generates heat, especially on uphills. you will want to be able to shed layers, then re-layer as comfort requires.
