FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS
Q1: Can I come even if I don't know how to speak French?
Everyone is welcome. You will enjoy a better experience if you are able to carry a basic French conversation, as you will be actively engaged with the other participants. One of the more advanced French speakers, the Event Host or the Meetup Group Organizer will gladly assist you with vocabulary if you are struggling with certain words.
We do want to point out our Meetups are not a structured class and we are not here to teach the language; rather, we help you practice it.
Q2: Can I come to your events if I am not a member of the Group?
As this group is Public, anyone could attend. However, certain events are reserved for registered group members. You can join some of the in-person events if you are accompanied by a Group member.
Also, we recommend you register with the Group, as this gives an Event Host an estimate of the amount of participants that will attend a Meetup, and whether or not an event will occur.
For virtual Meetups, we ask that your screen name matches your name on your Meetup profile, to give an idea to the Event Host of who you are when you join in the session's waiting room.
Q3: Where can I learn French in Halifax?
Check out Alliance Française Halifax (http://www.afhalifax.ca) or Université Sainte-Anne (http://www.usainteanne.ca). Both are excellent resources to learn French in this city.
You can also try out the Mauril app, developed by CBC/Radio-Canada, allowing you to learn French or English and accessible on Android and Apple smartphones. Check it out at https://mauril.ca/en. (PLEASE NOTE: Mauril is only accessible to devices physically located in Canada).
Q4: What if I'm not from Halifax?
You are always welcome to drop in! From time to time, our in-person Meetups have visitors come by while visiting the city.
You can also join us virtually during our virtual Meetups on Jitsi Meet. Not only we have people participating from elsewhere in Canada and from the United States, we have people living as far away as Algeria, Brazil, France, Morocco, the Netherlands, Spain and Ukraine, and even as far east as Iran, India, Japan and Indonesia come visit us.
Q5: What is the skill level of all speakers?
Participants at this Meetup have varied skill sets. They vary from those who just started taking French classes, to increasingly advanced speakers, and those for whom French is their mother tongue.
Q6: Where can I get French books?
The Halifax Public Library has a selection of French language books at their branches. Amazon also offers a certain selection of books in French.
Furthermore, Renaud-Bray (http://www.renaud-bray.com), a Québec-based bookstore, offers free standard shipping through Canada Post for all orders of CA$39.00 or more (before taxes) to all locations in Canada.
Q7: What if I want to organize a Meetup, or want to become an Event Organizer?
Send a message to the Group Organizer, or any member of the leadership team and pitch your idea.
