HOLLYFORD TRACK

Distance- 56 km

Duration- 7 days, 6 nights

(Track time lengthened in order to appreciate all huts and to give 2 nights at Martins Bay at the end)

Grade- Moderate Grade Track

(Some harder sections that require more attention due to exposed roots and fallen trees)

A Fully Independent Multi-Day Hike staying in Backcountry Huts

The Hollyford Track gives you a fantastic all round experience of Fiordland National Park.
You begin at the most impressive Fiordland terrain in the Darran Mountains area, and tramp for 4-5 days down the Hollyford River/Whakatipu Kā Tuka to the sea at Martins Bay.

You will walk through lush forest, beside a mighty river, alongside beautiful lakes then out to the wild West Coast.
With no alpine sections, this track is rarely cut off by snow so you can tramp it in any season (depending on weather).
Even in the rain this valley is still lovely for day walks or tramping, unlike walks in exposed alpine areas (however flooding can sometimes affect the track so check conditions before you go).

The Hollyford Track has excellent, comfortable huts and a good track, but is still a backcountry experience in Fiordland National Park.
It’s a good trip for you if you are fit, and like being a little off the beaten track, but still want a good, well marked track and huts to stay in.
Nearing the coast, you may be lucky enough to see native wildlife, including NZ fur seals, penguins, herons, and occasionally dolphins.

GREENSTONE-CAPLES TRACK

Distance- 61kms
Duration- 5 days, 4 nights
Grade- Moderate

A Fully Independent Multi-Day Hike staying in Backcountry Huts

The Caples and Greenstone Valleys are linked by McKellar Saddle, a sub-alpine pass, to make a moderate 4- 5 day round trip. It is a moderately demanding tramp with some days averaging 6-7 hours of walking. A reasonable degree of fitness is required.
The Greenstone Valley is a wide, open valley with tussock flats and beech forest. In comparison, the Caples Valley is a narrower valley filled with forest interspersed with grassy clearings. Either of these tracks can be linked with the Routeburn Track, or they can be walked as a one way track starting or finishing either at the Divide or the Greenstone Shelter.
The superb diversity of natural features in this area is recognised internationally with the establishment of the Te Wāhipounamu-South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
