Nov 24, 10 AM ~ Oregon Hill Overlook - Main Street Station Hike

This hike begins at the Oregon Hill Overlook located near the intersection of South Pine Street and Oregon Hill Parkway y'all. While billed as an urban hike (yawn) we will pass several murals, the C & O Tunnel on Church Hill, the historic Poe Museum, the Africn American Burial Ground and Main Street Station. Starting out we will follow Tredegar St to Brown's Island and negotiate the Pipeline where we may get a look at the eagle's nest in the middle of the river. Then we'll pick up the Canal Walk which we'll follow to 18th St. Then we will turn North and make our way to the ill fated C & O Tunnel on Church Hill. We will pass through the African Burial Ground, visit historic Main Street Station and continue on to Capitol Square. Grace, 2nd, Spring and Pine Streets take us back to our starting point at the Oregon Hill Overlook.

This is a hike of approximately 5.0 miles over developed urban pavement and sidewalks where the only hazards are automobile traffic, panhandlers, cobblestones and the occasional uneven crack in the sidewalk!. (This part is important.) This hike will begin at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. When you select "Directions" left side of screen) the best route from your location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be calculated for you.

Participants should be able to maintain a pace of 2.5 miles per hour but the ability to negotiate rocks, roots, low hanging branches, uncertain footing on hills, bridges and toxic plants in season will not be required for this downtown excursion. Just be careful with the uneven sidewalks and cobble stone streets!

There is no parking lot on Oregon Hill, but on street parking is available on one side of Oregon Hill Parkway, aka 2nd Street, and on S. Pine and S. Laurel Streets.
