Tattershall and the Surrounding Villages with Optional Sunday Lunch

Details

This is a circular 6 mile walk that takes you past a castle, alongside a river, past a nature reserve and through two woodlands. It uses field paths, river banks, roadside paths and woodland paths that are likely to be muddy.
Tattershall village lies between the Fens and the Wolds and is dominated by the 130ft red brick tower of the medieval Tattershall Castle and the impressive parish church which stands close by. The red brick tower is a masterpiece of early English brickwork and is one of the most important fifteenth century brick keeps in the country. It is now owned by the National Trust.
Both Tattershall Thorpe Carr and Tattershall Carr are owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. Both woodlands are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and are ancient woodlands. During the Second World War the woods were used as part of RAF Woodhall Spa. Remains of some of the structures built at the time can still be seen today and part of the base forms the Thorpe Camp.
We will stop for a short break midway at the Blue Bell Inn Blue Bell Inn - A Traditional Bar & Restaurant in Lincolnshire Steeped in British Aviation History (bluebell-inn.com) This beautiful old building dates back to 1257 and is documented as being an Inn since the 16th Century.
During the Second World War, the pub became a favourite off-base rendezvous for Officers and Servicemen from the nearby airfields. The ceiling is covered in signatures of past and present RAF Servicemen.
I am happy to book a table for Sunday lunch at The Tattershall Park Pub & Kitchen (dog friendly). Please let me know in the comments if you would like to stay for lunch.
There is free parking in the Market Square or a car park behind the Co-op for a small fee (2 hours free).
Please remember your £1 subs.
