Kayaking the Delaware River

Details

There will be lots to see on this one!

First, we’ll check out a small ship graveyard right near the put in at Pune Park, which features the Lightship Barnegat. Then we’ll ride the tide downstream under the Ben Franklin Bridge, hugging the NJ side so we can get an up close view of the Battleship New Jersey! After that we’ll scoot across to the Philadelphia side.

There are several old piers to check out, many with trees and brush growing on them. Another ship graveyard, “The Dead Fleet” may be visible. Towards the end, we’ll get a view of the SS United States, a massive ocean liner, soon to be sunk as a coral reef. Its departure from Philadelphia was delayed, and a new date has not been set. It could be gone by then but hopefully not.

Then we cross back to NJ, under the Walt Whitman Bridge to the takeout.

You’ll need a 14’ or longer boat to deal with chop and waves from passing ships. The Delaware can be a wild ride. It is also dry suit weather.

Start time is early to catch high tide at the start, so we’re not fighting it at the end. It’s about 7 miles point to point but lots of areas to explore, so it can be more.
