What we’re about
Welcome to Northern Beaches Meditation. Our group is dedicated to exploring the transformative power of meditation through a pragmatic, secular, and integral lens.
Types of meditation
- Mindfulness: We adopt Shinzen Young's Unified Mindfulness (UM) system to develop meditation skills, cultivate mindful awareness, and orient our practice towards comprehensive well-being.
- Insight (also known as Vipashyana or Vipassana): Closely related to mindfulness practice, this type of meditation aims to cultivate insight into the open, spacious, and interconnected nature of experience, leading to greater freedom and fulfilment.
- Nondual meditation: Drawing inspiration from wisdom traditions like Mahamudra, Dzogchen, and Nondual Shaiva Tantra, we will dive into practices that guide us to explore the nature of consciousness. The Waking Up app by Sam Harris is a popular example of this meditation style.
Our purpose
In addition to building community, this group aims to offer a more personal and nuanced approach to meditation education.
While meditation instruction is widely available through apps and classes, many people struggle to make meaningful progress and experience only surface-level benefits. Few apps and courses teach participants how to connect meditation with meaningful personal goals. Misconceptions about meditation are widespread in our culture.
More adventurous individuals may jump into a 10-day silent retreat but find themselves with no support to integrate the experience and deepen their practice afterwards.
Meditation, to be truly transformative, often requires personalised support, alignment between practice and meaningful goals, context, and ongoing feedback. By integrating different meditation traditions and modern group coaching techniques, this group aims to help you unlock the most profound benefits of meditation practice.
Who's this group for?
Whether you are new to meditation or an experienced practitioner, this group offers a space to deepen your practice, connect with others, and explore various paths to personal and spiritual growth.
