What we’re about

What we’re about
Are you interested in languages and culture, and looking for the opportunity to meet like-minded people? Would you like to practise your foreign or second language conversation skills in a relaxed atmosphere, and make friends in the process? Then read on.

Previously known as “Norwich French, Spanish and Italian Speakers,” the scope of the group has been expanded to welcome those who wish to practise speaking practically any language, including English (for those non-native speakers who wish to improve). At the time of writing, French and Spanish are by far the most popular foreign languages spoken by our members, and you are sure to have plenty of people to talk to at our events if you speak one or both of these languages.

We also have speakers of Italian, Portuguese and German among our members, although these are currently fewer so please do check the languages spoken by attendees on the event pages to avoid disappointment. If you are a speaker of one of these languages, or any other, we would be delighted to welcome you. We will do our best to introduce you to other members who wish to speak or practise the same language as you

Our events are informal. Our main indoor language conversation events take place at Cafe Bar Marzano, at the Forum, where there is space enough to assign a table (or more) to each foreign language. You are free to talk as much or as little as you like and to move around and chat to different people. Our Walk-and-Talk events are similar, except we’re on the go (in the fresh air and without the tables).

We occasionally arrange cultural and social events that may or may not have a connection to languages, to help strengthen our sense of community and foster friendships. Our organisers are currently few in number and with limited free time, so if any members wish to arrange additional events (such as single-language ones, or something based on a particular activity that you’re interested in) we can make you an Event Organiser to do this; just contact Andrew to express an interest, and for tips on how to arrange a successful meetup.

We aim to be a friendly and inclusive group that caters for all levels of language experience. Therefore, speakers anywhere from complete beginner to native level are welcome to come (even just to listen, depending on your competence & confidence). We we expect all members to be welcoming to and respectful of others, regardless of their social situation, background or language ability.

We don't charge to join the group or attend events - but a small donation of £1 per event, to help us cover the costs of running the group (Meetup subscription fees), is much appreciated. You can put this in the little collection box/jar/pouch that will be visible at officially-organised events. We also really appreciate your participation and feedback, to make this a group that everyone can enjoy.

We look forward to speaking with you at future events, and happy chatting!
