Overview: This is a moderate 9-mile loop using the Bear Bottom Loop and Big Oak Trail with an elevation gain of about 700 feet and great views of the south fork of the Shenandoah River. Hiking pace will be 2 – 2.5 mph. Lunch will be at one of the overlooks of the Shenandoah River.

Route: To view the specific route we’re currently planning to take, please use the attached HikingUpward map as a handy reference. Our route will be... Bear Bottom (blue) to Big Oak (white) to Tulip Poplar (dotted purple) / Big Oak (dotted white) to Redtail Ridge (red) and then back again via Big Oak and Bear Bottom. Bear Bottom is a loop (blue / dotted blue) and we normally go up one side and return via the other section of the loop. We are not planning to use the gray, orange, or green trails.
