This is a Sierra Club Military Outdoors event - a joint Sierra Club Northeast Florida and YMCA outing - FOR ACTIVE AND FORMER MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES ONLY.
We will hike approximately 3.75 miles on a variety of terrain with some elevation changes. It's a beautiful hike along lakes, creeks, ponds, up to longleaf pine forests, and down into a ravine. While not extreme, this is a moderately challenging trail. Hiking poles may help.

We will meet at the picnic area parking lot. Once you enter the park, drive to the parking lot located 1.8 miles from the ranger station. The picnic area is located at Little Lake Johnson. Look for the Sierra Club sign for your left turn, then drive in to where you see the two blue porta potties.Your entry fee will be reimbursed. Pay your fee, then bring me the receipt for reimbursement. After the hike, we'll go to nearby Johnny's BBQ in Keystone Heights. I will pay for your lunch.

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation and the Sierra Club have partnered to provide military veterans with all abilities the opportunity to paddleboard our unique waterways in SJC.We will explore Deep Creek. This rural area is part of the St Johns River Management District and jointly owned by the state. The wetland/swamp is part of the St Johns River floodplain.
There are NO restrooms on site.

The closest address is 7975 State Rd 207, Hastings, FL 32145. If you are heading west on 207 (towards Hastings) you will go through the light where 206 and 207 meet. You will then make the next U-turn and move over to the right lane (headed back to St. Augustine), there is a paved path on the right side just before you get back to the light at the 207/206 intersection. Look for a brown sign that says boat ramp on the right hand side.The trip will be approximately 2.5 hours; this includes a half hour for signing in, acquiring and fitting gear, and a mini paddling class. If you are bringing your own board or kayak please be sure to have a paddle and PFD (cannot be the type that self-inflate).
It is recommended that you bring:
- Headlmap
- Shoes you don’t mind getting dirty or wet (They must say on your feet for the entire duration of the trip.)
- Water
- Snack
- Rain Jacket
It is also recommended that personal items be secured in your vehicle or a dry bag, dry bags will not be provided. We are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or destroyed items.

The goal of Military Outdoors is to improve the lives of veterans and their families through connections with the outdoors and inspire members of the military and veteran community to become outspoken champions for environmental conservation and justice. - Hike the Jacksonville ArboretumJacksonville Arboretum & Gardens, Jacksonville, FL
The Jacksonville Arboretum is a beautiful 120-acre urban woodland with three miles of easy trails.
- You can walk all three miles with us or bail out safely at several points if you want to walk less
- Kids are welcome
- Trails are beautiful and easy
- Trails aren't wheelchair or stroller friendly, but the short loop around the lake is.
We will meet at the entrance at 9:45 a.m. Bring insect repellent and water. Restrooms are available. Sorry, no pets.

The Arboretum entrance is on the right approximately 1/4 mile. The address is 1445 Millcoe Rd, 32225. We will meet in the parking lot.
Cancellation Policy: Event will be held rain or shine, but may be canceled if weather threatens safety such as in the case of lightning or high winds in the forecast. Also, if the heat index is forecast to be over 103, then the outing will be canceled. Participants are advised to check Meetup for current status before traveling to the event. Events may need to be canceled at short notice.
