What we’re about

The South Philly Acoustic Jam provides a common gathering place for neighborhood amateur musicians and vocalists. Our group is a dynamic adult learner community where amateur musicians build skills, learn from others and play any instrument at any skill level; and our vocalists share their talents with vocal execution and improvisational arts in a supportive group environment. We are not an open mic group - everyone can play, and anyone can sing.

We offer a friendly, no-judgment musical culture focused on building skills. We are supportive of ourselves and other participants in ways that promote group musicianship. This unique environment fosters musical growth, development, and the best conditions for adult learners to understand and appreciate music.

We have an acoustic sound, and play classic Rock, Blues, Soul and Folk songs from curated song books. We welcome acoustic 6 or 12-string guitar, uke, electric bass, harmonica, percussion instruments, cajon, keyboards, and fiddle are all welcome. If your voice is your instrument, come and sing.

What should you bring to the Jam? An instrument if you play, and a capo if you play guitar. We provide music stands, chairs, and song books. South Philly Jam Song Books, years 2015-2019

Come early and help set up.

The South Philly branch of the Settlement Music School is hosting the Jam until the school closes for the summer. We meet on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 9pm in the main hall. We supply extensive songbooks of classic rock, blues, soul, folk music, with microphones for vocalists.

Settlement school provides a professional music recital hall for our jam, music stands, and chairs. There is a $30 Annual special student fee paid to the Settlement School for all new and returning members. The student fees are paid at the front desk, not to the Jam.

We request an OPTIONAL $5 fee at each session to cover the costs of printing and other expenses. You are welcome to come and play regardless of whether you pay the weekly fee.

The Mary Louise Curtis branch of the Settlement Music School is located at 416 Queen Street, Philadelphia PA 19147. Parking on the building grounds is free and ample.

We support South Philadelphia communities and the broader metropolitan area by providing occasional and focused musical outreach to senior residential buildings, community music programs, park programs, and other charitable community functions.
