What weβre about
[This is a hybrid meetup -online and in person! π]
In love with personal development? In love with reading? Well, then, this is the group for you! This is a space for real and raw discussions, where you are invited to bring your whole self to the table, not just the 'good vibes only' version. Even if you feel like absolute crud on the day and just want to giggle at our lively discussion with your camera off, that's cool too π.
We discuss a featured personal development book every month and outline strategies for implementing key take-aways for the betterment of our own lives as well as for the lives of those around us.
Are you writing a personal development book? Well, this is a great opportunity to connect with a community of readers interested in the genre!
These meetings are facilitated by a full-time Life Coach (yours truly) and former university educator with over a decade of international experience in facilitating discussions across groups from various cultural backgrounds and beliefs. We value inclusivity π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈβπ½π€πβ€, and insist on respect discussion of differing views.

Podcast: Thriving Between the Lines - Examining personal development books through the lens of intersectionalityFrom the book jacket:
Despite living in a world where instant communication is at our fingertips, it sometimes feels harder than ever to make meaningful connections. There's an overwhelming focus on romantic partners, but frankly, we're sick of platonic relationships missing out on the hype.
Friendships are some of the most significant relationships you'll ever have, and navigating conflict, miscommunication and new life phases is part and parcel of holding on to really good mates.
After seven years in an unholy union as best friends, twin flames and platonic soulmates, Sal and Al from Two Broke Chicks share what they've learned to help you find, keep and say goodbye to the friendships in your life.
Whether you're struggling to balance your social life, worried your pals don't like your new partner, unsure how to deal with that toxic friend, or simply at a loss as to how to make friends as an adult, consider this book your brand new bestie.
'Honest and relatable...offering real tools to help you have the quality friendships you dream of.' - Alexis Fernandez-Preiksa, author of The Neuroscience of Self Love
'This book is a tonic. Al and Sal masterfully centre friendship and navigate the complexities of platonic love in all of the ways it deserves to be valued and seen.' - Hannah Ferguson, author of Bite Back
'The ultimate companion guide for friendship in your 20s, 30s and beyond. A must read! - Jemma Sbeg, host of The Psychology of Your 20s podcast
-----------
At this meetup, we will discuss Al and Sal's insights on how to find and nurture modern friendships and how these ideas may relate to our own lives. Love the book? Hate the book? No time to read the book? You're all welcome!
Looking forward to seeing everyone π

What perfect timing for this book! With the silly season upon us, now is the time to consider how we are connecting during all of the gatherings we may be attending over the holiday period. This will also be a great time to look ahead to how we can nurture in-person connection in 2025.
Note: We first discussed this book in January of 2022, but we've evolved so much as a club that I just had to bring this one back as a way to close 2024 in true Vanguard style!Join us in December to discuss "The Art of Gathering: How we meet and why it matters", by Priya Parker.

Podcast: Thriving Between the Lines - Examining personal development books through the lens of intersectionalityFrom the book jacket:
Hosts of all kinds, this is a must-read! --Chris Anderson, owner and curator of TED
From the host of the New York Times podcast Together Apart, an exciting new approach to how we gather that will transform the ways we spend our time together--at home, at work, in our communities, and beyond.
In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive--which they don't have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. At a time when coming together is more important than ever, Parker sets forth a human-centered approach to gathering that will help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play.
Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn't, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings--conferences, meetings, a courtroom, a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp--and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience.
The result is a book that's both journey and guide, full of exciting ideas with real-world applications. The Art of Gathering will forever alter the way you look at your next meeting, industry conference, dinner party, and backyard barbecue--and how you host and attend them.
***
At this meetup, we will discuss some of Parker's insights around human connection, organisation, etc., and how these insights relate to our own lives. Love the book? Hate the book? No time to read the book? You are all welcome!
