PLEASE NOTE: the correct address is 7350 Victor Mendon Road. The “pin” is correct but I have not been able to correct the number. Frustrating.
Join us for a 2 hour work party at
the pond at Lehigh Crossing Park. I will meet volunteers at the wooden bench on the east side of the pond. Volunteers can park in the parking lot and walk to the pond or drive up and park in the field. We will continue work on the thick growth of phragmites along the boardwalk bordering the pond. We will clear and pile dry stalks of phragmites on the shore to help decrease the ability of this aggressive grass to dominate the shore. In areas we have done this, the native plants that have been suppressed seem to be able to sprout through the dead reeds and thrive. Bring work gloves, wear sturdy, preferably waterproof footwear, water to drink and a favorite pair of clippers or loppers but some tools will be available to use.
About the photo: By cutting the stalks below water level progress should be made to rein in some of the rampant spread. So if the pond looks a little bigger, it is a little bigger. We will continue to work on this indefinitely, encouraged by the return of so many native plants that have been waiting for their rightful place in the sun. Join us in you can, even one time of less than 2 hours makes a difference.
