De qué se trata
Tired of book clubs choosing the same books over and over again? Milan Kundera’s sexist "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", Matt Haig's predictable "The Midnight Library" or Paulo Coelho's overrated "The Alchemist"?
We were too and that's why we decided to create the Beyond Borders Readers Club!
- Why Beyond Borders?
Our intention is to motivate ourselves and the group to read books by authors and about topics that are beyond what we’re used to. We want to cross the borders of reading books mainly written in English, avoiding where possible, books from best seller lists, as well as stepping away from reading mainly male authors and other authors who are already over-represented in the publishing industry. - Why Readers Club?
We aim to set the focus on the readers as well as the books. Because would books even exist without there being someone to read them? - Our Book Picks
Each month a book will be chosen using the following guidelines where possible:
- Preferably female and non cis-gender authors
- Authors and/or stories that represent minority groups
- The original language of the book is not English
- The book is easily available in Barcelona.
We encourage readers to make future book suggestions, so if you have some in mind that fit in with the criteria mentioned above, bring them along to one of our next meetings!
***All discussions will be held in English and in-person in Barcelona.***
Before attending, please ensure you are familiar with our Community Guidelines as outlined below:
- Aim to arrive at the scheduled time
- Allow others to share without interrupting
- Help foster a group dynamic by avoiding dispersing into smaller groups
- Maintain a device-free environment where possible
- Come with an open mind and curiosity!

Ver todo- Discussing "Guapa" by Saleem HaddadTrigo Coffee, Barcelona
BOOK: Guapa
AUTHOR: Saleem Haddad
ORIGINAL LANGUAGE: English
PAGES: 368
PUBLISHED: March 2016SUMMARY: Set over the course of twenty-four hours, Guapa follows Rasa, a gay man living in an unnamed Arab country, as he tries to carve out a life for himself in the midst of political and social upheaval. Rasa spends his days translating for Western journalists and pining for the nights when he can sneak his lover, Taymour, into his room. One night Rasa's grandmother—the woman who raised him—catches them in bed together. The following day Rasa is consumed by the search for his best friend Maj, a fiery activist and drag queen star of the underground bar, Guapa, who has been arrested by the police. Ashamed to go home and face his grandmother, and reeling from the potential loss of the three most important people in his life, Rasa roams the city’s slums and prisons, the lavish weddings of the country’s elite, and the bars where outcasts and intellectuals drink to a long-lost revolution. Each new encounter leads him closer to confronting his own identity, as he revisits his childhood and probes the secrets that haunt his family. As Rasa confronts the simultaneous collapse of political hope and his closest personal relationships, he is forced to discover the roots of his alienation and try to re-emerge into a society that may never accept him.
