Lost Horse Mine - Joshua Tree

Details

Lost Horse Mine Loop in Joshua Tree is 6.5 miles, 833 ft. in elevation gain, rated 4.7 moderate (All Trails).

If we take it counterclockwise, the hike starts with a gradual uphill climb, then ascends steeply up towards the Lost Horse Mine. The climb offers striking views of Pleasant Valley and Malapai Hill. As we crest the hill, the Mine comes into view.

We will spend some time exploring the mine works and taking a break. The remainder of the hike is downhill, passing columnar basalt and a rock cabin.

This hike is rated moderately strenuous for the steep uphill, but most of it is moderate.

To secure parking at the relatively small parking area at the mine, carpooling from the Joshua Tree Visitor Center (6554 Park Blvd, Joshua Tree) into the park is recommended.

I have a National Parks pass and have room for 4 more people in my car. Otherwise, the entrance fee is $30 per vehicle.

Bring sufficient water/snacks. Wear proper clothing including sturdy hiking shoes and a hat.

The ending time is estimated, based on how long we explore and break during the hike.
