What we’re about
When you sign-up, please include a full face profile photo so we can recognize you when we are at an event -- or no photo at all if you are concerned about your online privacy. This is a REQUIREMENT to be admitted. (More details at bottom of this page.)
We are viewing together films -- including documentaries -- that are "mainstream" [rarely] or "classic" or "independent" or even "different". Always accompanied by a discussion which follows a certain format. We meet in local movie theatres (like the Broad), cultural centers (like Zeitgeist), libraries (like Mid-City branch), people's homes around the Greater New Orleans area, or even outdoors using a wall and a projector. Online viewing -- like Youtube clips, Kanopy, Netflix -- and the better television programs -- like PBS, BookTV -- are parts of our offerings.
Since Covid, we are also meeting for the discussion only. Participants must have watched the material on their own, sometimes at their own expense, before coming to the discussion.
As not to make anyone uncomfortable or shocked (except those who enjoy "shocking", of course), there is a warning for any program that is definitely not mainstream, might be perceived as "weird", "offensive", "transgressive", whatever. At the other end of the spectrum, we are also totally into the BFI List of Films to See Before Turning 14.
We have a common-sense (and common sense) policy concerning our Meetup Profiles for the group.
1. Your User Name should be the first name you will go by among us -- and maybe something more like a last name or a last name initial to distinguish you from possible namesakes.
2. Your Profile Photo should be as close to a headshot as possible -- in case of doubt, think driver's licence or ID badge for work. (Or no picture at all if you are concerned about your online privacy.)
As this policy might be stricter than that of other Meetup groups you also belong to, creating a separate Meetup account -- attached to a separate email account of yours -- might be necessary. We apologize for the possible inconvenience.
