Kayak from Kailua to Kaneohe (& Mokumanu Cave!) - 7 miles
Details
Kailua to Kaneohe (& Mokomanu Sea Cave!) - 8 miles - We’ll be paddling from Kailua, at Fort Hase Beach on Marine Corps Base Hawaii, to Heeia Kea Boat Harbor in the middle of Kaneohe Bay
From Fort Hase Beach, we'll go north along coast to sea-cliffs, around Mokapu point (Marine Corps Base Hawaii - MCBH), out to the sea cave at Mokomanu Islands, then into Kaneohe Bay at Pyramid rock, to finish up at the Heeia Kea Marina on the inside of Kaneohe Bay. The route features interesting and scenic geographical features: 400 foot sea cliffs and a huge sea cave that goes back into the Mokomanu islands for about 100 yards that we will paddle into, Wave size permitting. We've gotten as many as 23 kayaks in the cave at once in the past with plenty of room to spare! Look at the pictures of this paddle from previous years on this web site BY CLICKING THE [PAST] TAB and you'll see what it's like!!! On a calm day, this is an area no one forgets! This cave has a cathedral-like domed ceiling, while the water is approx. 50 ft. deep at the entrance of the cave and only 10 ft deep at the back of the cave with very smooth walls inside the cave. The high ceiling, wide open interior with vertical, smooth walls and deep water make this cave safer than most that you can paddle into. If conditions are good, we'll try to get pictures of all kayaks inside the cave, so bring your camera!!!!! Uniquely, the sea cave mouth faces east, so there is great sunlight and visibility while the sun is low in the morning, but once the sun is high, you can see nothing but black after you enter the cave. For that reason we want to get an earlier start on this paddle than we do normally, meeting at the front gate of MCBH at 7:30 AM. Shuttle cars leave at 7:45. On the water by 8:45. At the cave by 10:00 while there is still enough light inside to see everything clearly and get some good pictures. Bring snorkel gear, as there is a lot to see underwater in and around the cave area also. Finish between 12:00 and 1:00 PM. While very scenic, it also can be very bumpy water and frequently about 1/2 of our crew gets SEA SICK, so..... if even if you DON'T have a tendency toward sea-sickness, get some SEA SICKNESS MEDS or bring Pepsid or Tagamet (antacids you can buy at the drug store), as they are very good for nausea relief.
*==== CHANGED YOUR MIND? ====
Be sure to check the Meetup – Hua Iki web site for any changes and updates and remember to change your RSVP if you change your mind and cannot go.
*==== KNOW YOUR LIMITS ====
Know your capabilities, limits, forecast conditions and check your equipment before you go. Sun Screen, hat and plenty of water are a must. Sun glasses, gloves and dry bag are a good idea. Remember to stay in sight of the group and TELL OTHERS IF YOU ARE LEAVING. You alone are responsible for your health and safety. Check conditions at http://www.surfnewsnetwork.com/ or call the National Weather service at 808-973-4380 (#2 to get wind speeds and #3 for surf report). Knowing the latest forecast, you can decide (based upon individual abilities) whether to paddle, or stay home and clean the yard.
*==== NEED TO RENT ====
The club does not own, rent, pick up or deliver kayaks to events. Check club site for possible ride sharing/equipment/sharing and tandems. If you need to rent a kayak, call BOB first, then you can try GO BANANAS (808-737-9514) AND KAILUA BEACH ADVENTURES (808)-262-6555) and they give Meetup members a discount off regular rental rates! MENTION YOU ARE JOINING THE PADDLING CLUB TRIP. They also have car top pads, straps, dry bags, and backrests. You can also pick up your kayak the day before, after 3 pm so you can drive straight to the put-in the next day; let them know and they’ll be happy to accommodate your request.
