Heeia Pier in Kaneohe, across Kaneohe Bay to Chinaman's Hat. 6.1 Miles
Aloha Paddlers, This will be a great beginners paddle if the wind is down!
We'll be paddling the entire route inside Kaneohe Bay where we'll have no exposure to open ocean waves, but we will have the Sunken Island(google this) lots of turtles, sometimes Manta Rays and great Snorkeling areas! And to Top It Off - literally - we'll be climbing to the top of Mokolii Island, AKA Chinaman's Hat, for a group photo. This location provides one of the most Scenic views of Kaneohe Bay and the Koolau Mountains available. It's an easy 5.5 mile paddle in protected waters and is very worth doing. So, here's the plan........Meet at Heeia State Boat Harbor at 8:00 AM to off-load kayaks, and then leave at 8:20 to shuttle cars to Kualoa Park on the North end of the bay. We'll then paddle away from Heeia about 9:15 AM, paddle about 30 min to the sunken Is., then paddle around it to the turtle and Manta Ray grounds behind it. From there, it's a short 4 miles to Chinaman's hat where we'll take a break, go for short hike to the top. You really will want to use the pics you get at the top to send to friends and family if they don't live here as it'll make them crazy jealous that you do!! :) We should be finishing up between noon and 2:00 pm. If the wind is down, this should be a fun, easy paddle so I'll look forward to seeing you all there!!
*==== CHANGED YOUR MIND? ====
Be sure to check the Meetup – Hua Iki web site for any changes and updates due to weather, and to change your RSVP if you change your mind and will not be going.
*==== KNOW YOUR LIMITS ====
Know your capabilities, limits, forecast conditions and check your equipment before you go. Sun Screen, hat and plenty of water are a must. Sun glasses, gloves and dry bag are a good idea. Remember to stay in sight of the group and TELL OTHERS IF YOU ARE LEAVING. You alone are responsible for your health and safety. Check conditions at http://www.surfnewsnetwork.com/ or call the National Weather service at 808-973-4380 (#2 to get wind speeds and #3 for surf report). Knowing the latest forecast, you can decide (based upon individual abilities) whether to paddle, or stay home and clean the yard.
*==== NEED TO RENT ====
The club does not own, rent, pick up or deliver kayaks to events. Post a message on the club site for possible ride or equipment sharing. If you need a tandem or a single, I might have one or two available so feel free to call me at 808-375-1030 and we can try to set one up. Otherwise, you can call Kailua Beach Adventures- 808-262-6555 or Go Bananas 808-737-9514 - and you will receive a 15% discount off their regular price on the rental.
