**Tour Schedule and Overview:**

**12 Noon to 1:00pm: Visit the Wallach Art Center Exhibit (on your own).**
*Meet outside the Arts Center at 1:00pm*
**1:00pm - 3:00pm: Guided Hudson River Shoreline Walk, ending at 181 Street in Washington Heights**

The Hudson River which forms the western shorline of Manhattan and Riverdale in The Bronx has been called "America's River" because of its impact on history and its scenic beauty. **After your self-guided visit to this unique exhibition,** we'll stroll approximately 3 miles along the river's shoreline, ending in the Hudson Heights neighborhood at 181st Street, convenient to the A train and #1. Along the way we'll recount the success stories (Eric Canal, Defeat of the ConEdison power plant at Storm King Mountains) and the ongoing environmental challenges that include the cleanup of the river from a century of industrial pollution.

**The Wallach Art Gallery Opens at 12 noon. Be sure to allow 45 minutes to one hour to see the exhibit and use the restroom.**

**Art Exhibit: "Shifting Shorelines: Art, Industry and Ecology along the Hudson River."**
*Shifting Shorelines* brings together historic and contemporary art, visual culture, and environmental science to engage the history of human existence, commerce, and industry along the Hudson estuary. Focusing on the river’s edges from Albany southward to its flow into the Atlantic Ocean, the exhibition foregrounds the impact of local industry on the natural environment, highlighting the history of the river's distinctive ecological features such as brackish and salt marshes, mudflats, and beaches, along with the docks, factories, and buildings that crowded them out. Through visual and material evidence, *Shifting Shoreline*s demonstrates the various cycles of exploitation, damage, and reclamation.

**Meeting place is Herald Square, 35th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue** \- by the James Gordon Bennett Monument and small park across from Macy's\. Look for the large bell and the two figures\.

Make sure to take care of business beforehand - Macy's is right there and is open late and has restrooms.

This is a tour I have given many times before - but not since 2021. It's a bit of a crazy experience: The feedback has always been positive.

**TOUR DESCRIPTION**
Join us for this festive late Friday night meetup on December 13th at 9:00pm to stroll the streets of midtown and enjoy the holiday displays, department store windows and lights of the City - and given the later hour, without the huge crowds, hopefully!

We'll explore the history of NYC's holiday traditions and which stores started it all - along with how such traditions as Santa Claus and the Christmas Tree were popularized in NYC. Stops include, Bryant Park, which also has a beautiful tree (pictured), Bergdorf Goodman's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, ... and more. We'll also learn more about some of midtown's iconic buildings that we'll pass by along our route.

Approximately 2 miles of walking. We end by Central Park South - 59th Street - convenient to many subways.

**We will have an optional Holiday Party and dinner before the walk from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at a local restaurant, Luliano's at 7902 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge. Check out the menu via this link: pizza, salads, pasta and other entrees and decent prices.**

**The guided walk will last from 8:00pm - approximately 10:00pm**. It will depart from the restaurant where we will have the optional holiday dinner. At the end of the tour, you will want to take the bus on 86th Street back to the R train or walk to the D train ( a good 20 minutes).

**OVERVIEW**
Tis' the season to enjoy the amazing lights of the residential neighborhoods of Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge Brooklyn! Are they garish, beautiful, kitschy, over-the-top, spectacular or all of the above? You be the judge! We'll walk a good 2 miles and enjoy some holiday cheer! I will mix in some colorful local neighborhood and Brooklyn history for good measure, along with how New York is largely responsible for inventing Santa Claus along with popularizing holiday traditions such as the Christmas tree.
