27th Fribourg Linux Seminar : Home Intelligence using MQTT, Thread and Matter

Details

Join us at the 27th Fribourg Linux Seminar, where we explore Home Intelligence using MQTT, Thread and Matter.

Our expert speakers will share their insights and experiences, offering practical advice and best practices for running secure, reliable and resilient devices in today's fast-paced world.

Don't miss this opportunity to network with fellow developers and computer science professionals, and learn from the best in the business.

Context
Join us for an enlightening seminar on how to make homes intelligent using MQTT, Thread and Matter to facilitate human being's life and, potentially, save energy. Explore the intersection of technology and social impact as we delve into innovative Home Intelligence applications.

Agenda

- 17h00 : Reception of Attendees

- 17h30 : Welcome and Information HEIA-FR (Jacques Supcik, Luca Haab HEIA-FR, Roland Scherwey, Professors HEIA-FR)

- 17h40 : IoT adapter for smart meter data, Hermann Hüni, passionate entrepreneur & co-founder of gPlug.ch

The new ‘intelligent measuring systems’ – also known as smart meters (SM) – to be installed by distribution system operators (DSO) between 2018 and 2027 must, according to Art. 8a of the Electricity Supply Ordinance (StromVV/OApEl), also provide Customer Information Interface (CII). The gPlug IoT adapters enable energy data owners to receive data from these SM-CII and use it in their local IP networks in a simple form, without having to deal with the technical challenges of the different CII. The gPlug.chIoT adapters use an ESP32 MCU, the open-source Tasmota firmware, MQTT and can be operated ‘cloud-free’. To show all this: a building power consumption and generation demo !

- 18h10 : Enhancing Escape Room Experiences with MQTT Protocol and Node-Red for Real-Time Interactivity, Julien Richard - Electronics designer & developer - HouseTrap Group SA

Discover how the MQTT protocol is revolutionizing the escape room industry by enabling real-time, responsive puzzle and environment control. This session will introduce MQTT’s role as a lightweight, publish-subscribe messaging protocol, ideal for interactive and immersive experiences. We’ll explore how to combine MQTT and Node-Red to connect and interact with embedded systems—such as sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers—to create dynamic puzzles that respond to players’ actions, elevate the challenge, and enhance game flow. We'll illustrate how MQTT-driven solutions can add interactivity, coordination, and scalability to escape games that offers players unforgettable, engaging adventures.

- 18h40 : Matter/Thread - making home automation simply happen, Antoine Delabays, passionate Engineer & HES-SO student

Home automation is often inaccessible to beginners due to fragmentation between incompatible manufacturers, which severely limits its adoption. The Matter and Thread standards were developed to address this challenge by unifying and simplifying the home automation ecosystem. In this speech, we will dive into the key aspects of these transformative standards and explore how they are driving the development of Thread and Matter-compatible devices. We’ll also highlight the significant impact of these standards on the work being done by iolo in Murten, showcasing how these technologies are shaping the future of home automation.

- 19h10 : Apéritif and Networking
