As it turns out, ice plant isn’t very cool when it comes to supporting biodiversity. This plant was brought over from South Africa in the 1900s to address erosion control along railroad tracks. It turns out the plant has shallow roots and is quite heavy making it not very effective at slope stabilization, but unfortunately it thrives in California’s mild climate making it highly invasive. It forms a thick mat that chokes out all other native plants and even alters soil composition. Don’t be fooled by its evergreen succulence, these large swaths of plants are actually ecological deserts that support almost zero wildlife. Help us restore this habitat at our restoration event!

Come check out what we do! We'll be removing invasive ice plant at the newer restoration site. This will be a great day to attend if you've never seen the habitat restoration process from the very beginning!
