This is a seven mile moderate circular walk from and to the isolated hilltop village of Llangynwyd, giving fine views of an area largely untouched by the industry that totally changed nearby communities.

St Cynwyd's church with it’s fine whitewashed tower is built on a Celtic settlement, and during the 18th century, the area was associated with Welsh bard [Wil Hopcyn](https://biography.wales/article/s-HOPC-WIL-1700) (d 1741) and was a centre of Welsh literary tradition. Most houses in the village still retain their Welsh names and it is the location of one of South Wales’s oldest pubs, the [Old House](https://theoldhouse1147.co.uk/history/), established in 1147.

This is a good winter walk, as it mainly follows quiet country lanes, drovers roads and forestry tracks. We will pass some isolated farms, ancient monuments, and the remains of iron age forts. There will be some paths across fields and woodland, which may be muddy, and some moderate ascents and descents. We will also be on exposed hillsides, so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing and bring a packed lunch & drinks.

As we are using the pub car park for free, it would be appreciated if people could buy a drink in the bar at the end of the walk as a thank you.
