A walk of about 8 miles in the Kent countryside. It’s a very rural walk that doesn’t include any towns, but we pass through two pretty and historic villages, Penshurst and Chiddingstone. We also get a view of the impressive 14th century manor house Penshurst Place. Some small hills, but nothing steep. As is inevitable at this time of year, it might be muddy in places.

**START OF WALK:** the walk will start at 10.50 am at Penshurst station. We’ll leave the station from the exit on the south side. If you arrive from Redhill, use the footbridge to cross over the railway to the other side. If you arrive from Tonbridge, use the exit on the side where you arrive.

**LUNCH:** we hope to have a pub lunch at The Leicester Arms in Penshurst, which is quite upmarket and a bit expensive. But in case they can't accommodate the whole group (there will be others in addition to people signed up here on Meetup), you are recommended to bring some food with you. In any case, some people might prefer to bring a packed lunch. You can of course still come in for a drink, but please don’t eat your own food in the pub.

**END OF WALK:** the walk will end at back at Penshurst station.

**TRAVEL:** if coming from London, there are two ways to get there.

**Option 1:** take the 9.37 Southern train from London Bridge to Redhill, which also calls at East Croydon (9.53). At Redhill, take the 10.26 train to Penshurst. Arrives at Penshurst at 10.48.

**Option 2:** take the 9.26 Southeastern train from Charing Cross to Tonbridge, which also calls at London Bridge (9.35) and Sevenoaks (10.08). At Tonbridge, take the 10.26 train to Penshurst. Arrives at Penshurst at 10.34.

If you drive to the start, be aware that the station is actually in the village of Chiddingstone Causeway, not Penshurst itself.

**TRAIN TICKETS:** the ticket that gives you the most flexibility for both outward and return journeys is an off-peak day return valid via either Tonbridge or Redhill. This costs £21, or £13.95 with a railcard. However, an off-peak day return valid via Redhill only, but not Tonbridge, costs less at £16.60 (or £11.05 with a railcard). As usual, it will be less if you only need a ticket from a Zone boundary.

Please be aware there will be more people on the walk than are signed up here, because the group has other members who aren’t on Meetup. Around 15 to 30 people is typical on our walks.

**ABOUT THE GSWG:**

The GSWG is an independent walking group. The group’s costs are funded by our members, who pay a small membership fee (£12 a year). But you’re welcome to come on one or two walks to try out the group before deciding whether you want to pay the fee and join us as a full member.

Despite the name, we do in fact have walks on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Once you’ve paid the membership fee we’ll send you full details of all our walks (we usually have two a month), and you can come on as many as you want for no further charge.
