What we’re about
Welcome to Geekocracy: the best Meetup group for fun events with your fellow geeks and gamers! The goal of this group is to coordinate fun and inclusive social events — like happy hours, game nights, movie premieres, etc. — to get out from behind our TV screens and make new friends. Geek culture is taking over the world and we're going to be in the middle of it! If anyone has recommendations or would like to help with organizing events, reach out to me or one of our event organizers.
GROUP POLICIES (PLEASE READ)
No-shows: The participation of our members is what makes Geekocracy fun, and it’s important for us to have an accurate headcount. Please arrive promptly to events or let the host know if you are delayed. If you do not plan to come, CHANGE YOUR RSVP TO "NO" before the event or contact the host. If you do not, you will be marked "no-show." Repeat offenders will receive a warning and may be removed without further notice.
Behavior: Harassing, annoying, and poor behavior is grounds for removal. Please be respectful of your fellow geeks!
***All events are strictly 18+ unless with a parent or legal guardian***
***Please have a visible picture of yourself when requesting to join***

See all- Kayak the Mangrove Tunnels at Weedon IslandWeedon Island Pier, canoe dock, Saint Petersburg, FL
The tide should be high enough to explore the mangrove tunnels at this beautiful preserve. Let's go for paddle! This is a moderate level kayaking experience with some narrow areas; the full trail is about 6.5 miles.
It's important to note that 1 p.m. is the LAUNCH TIME. Please get there earlier to ensure you get in the water around the same time as the group. Latecomers must play catch-up, which is no fun.
Rent a kayak at: https://ecomersion.com/weedon-island-kayak-rentals/
Single kayaks are $40 for 2 hours or $50 for 4 hours. I highly recommend the 4-hour rental if you want to do the entire loop at a reasonable pace. Otherwise you likely will have to turn around (and give yourself enough time to do that). Renters will be responsible for managing their own time. Renters will launch from Ecomersion's spot, and can meet up with me (I'm bringing my own) just past the pier. I cannot stress this enough: RESERVE YOUR KAYAK EARLY! THEY DO GET SOLD OUT!If you bring your own kayak, parking is limited at the launch by the pier. I recommend dropping your kayak off at the launch and then parking in the main lot, about a 5-10 minute walk.
Recommended to bring: A water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water shoes, snacks, a waterproof phone case or drybag.
How to find me: I will be in a lime green kayak. I will be just past the pier as I wait for our party around 1 p.m., then will post a comment when I depart toward Marker 1.
Note: In the case of inclement weather, this meetup may be canceled.
- Book Club: All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1)Bangkok Jazz Thai Restaurant, Temple Terrace, FL
This month we're reading "All Systems Red" by Martha Wells, the first in the Murderbot series. Reading the book is encouraged but not required as long as you don't mind spoilers.
Here's a summary of the book:
In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid, a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.
The venue: We picked Thai food this time! Bangkok Jazz Tampa has good reviews. Find the menu here.
