We'll follow Edinburgh’s Innocent Rail path, Niddrie Burn, Brunstane Burn and Joppa before reaching Portobello to finish with a well earned refreshment/bite to eat.
THE INNOCENT RAILWAY
- The Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway nicknamed “The Innocent Railway” opened in 1831 and was initially horse-drawn as steam engines were considered dangerous!
- It earned the nickname "the Innocent Railway" due to its safety record: it carried 300 to 400 thousand passengers a year without fatalities, in an age where steam engines had a reputation as dangerous.
- The 517 metre Innocent Railway Tunnel runs under Holyrood Park and was the first railway tunnel in Britain.
- The railway closed in 1968 but this section re-opened as a path for walkers and cyclists in 1981.
