Since 1949, New Contemporaries has presented an annual survey exhibition of emerging and early career artists from UK art schools and learning programmes. This unique platform provides artists the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience, alongside a programme of opportunities to support the development of their practice.
The 2024 exhibition features 35 artists, who have been selected through an open call by internationally renowned artists Liz Johnson Artur, Permindar Kaur and Amalia Pica. Launching in Plymouth across three venues, KARST, The Levinsky Gallery and MIRROR, this exhibition marks the first time New Contemporaries has returned to Plymouth in 60 years.
Works are arranged thematically at each venue offering an overview of urgent lived concerns and interests from this generation of artists. Recurrent themes include mindfulness, consumerism, environmentalism, geographical borders, and identity politics. A diverse range of mediums and approaches are featured including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and sound.
The Levinsky Gallery artists respond to the commodification of mindfulness and self-care, and consumerism. Other works in this gallery explore conviviality and social gatherings, juxtaposed with those that suggest anxieties or discontent in an increasingly alienated and digitally accelerated world.
The exhibiting artists, with names in bold featured at The Levinsky Gallery, are: Motunrayo Akinola, Libby Bove, Max Boyla, Molly Burrows, Fergus Carmichael, Mya Cavner and Edith Liben, Karen David, Roo Dhissou, Beverley Duckworth, Georgia Dymock, Tom Fairlamb, Farzaneh Ghadyanloo, Sara Graรงa, Dageong Han, Siomha Harrington, Anna Howard, Fi Isidore, Asmaa Jama and Gouled Ahmed, Laura Kazaroff, AC Larsen, Sophie Lloyd, Hazel O'Sullivan, Sun Oh, Sara Osman, Saul Pankhurst, Varshga Premarasa, Elliott Roy, Millie Shafiee, Sai Stephenson, Valentino Vannini, Joshua Whitaker, Danilo Zocatelli Cesco, and Yang Zou.
The exhibition will tour from Plymouth to the ICA, London from 15 January - 23 March 2025.

- No One Alone at ChristmasSherwell Hall, Plymouth
The Christmas season can be both joyous and sad. It is a time for families and friends to come together and have wonderful celebrations. But it is also a time for those on their own to feel very isolated and lonely. To compound the problems many organisations we rely on for support close down over the whole Christmas period and donโt open until the New Year. And some people have no contact at all with anyone for the entire period.
For the third consecutive year, Park Pharmacy Trust and Plymouth Social Isolation Forum are celebrating No One Alone at Christmas. This is an interfaith (and no faith) gathering open to all. To enable us this year not to have to turn anyone away because of lack of space, Sherwell United Church have generously offered their Hall from 1pm until 6 pm on 25 December Christmas Day and again on 26 December Boxing Day.
The fun of Christmas for many people is actually being involved in planning, preparing and bringing food to share, making and putting up decorations thinking of gifts for the free raffle prizes and most importantly, helping others. This is another DIY Christmas where you can do as much or as little as you like.
Please join in the fun and send us any/all ideas you may have to make No One Alone Christmas 2024 the best Christmas yet!ADDRESS: SHERWELL HALL, NORTH HILL, PLYMOUTH, PL4 8ER
