What we’re about
Welcome to the Great Outdoors Santa Barbara Ventura County chapter! Our group is here to support engaging outings along the stunning California Southern Central Coast and beyond.
When it comes to fun, we've got it – from camping trips to day hikes, backpacking adventures to whitewater rafting. Our all-volunteer organization comes up with different outings every year that appeal to a variety of interests.
What about the Great Indoors? Definitely! Our chapter members plan movie nights, museum tours and other social gatherings where you can meet some fantastic people who share your love for the outdoors, even indoors...
As our history is rooted in the LGBT community, our organization has provided safe spaces in nature for queer folks and allies since 1977. We encourage participation by outdoors enthusiasts of all genders and orientations to help continue this essential tradition!
Now, logistics – when you become a member of GO, you'll have access to outings and activities from all chapters. Join in on a pool party in Palm Springs or a Pride parade in San Diego, no problem! Membership may be required for some events, but not all. So check out a day hike or a social gathering before you commit!
We also encourage our membership to participate in the trip planning process. With educational trainings and resources available as a member, even you can become a trip leader!
So why wait? Dive into the outdoors with us, explore the beauty of nature, and make lasting connections with fellow adventure seekers. Come join the fun!

See all- Post Election Stress Reduction HikeEllwood Mesa Open Space & Sperling Preserve, Goleta, CA
Let's get together outside, take a collective breath, and relax. What better way to relieve some stress than enjoying an easy hike with friends through the beautiful 230 acre Ellwood Mesa Preserve. And then afterwards go across the highway to the Timbers Roadhouse for lunch.
Ellwood Mesa Open Space Preserve in Goleta offers scenic coastal views, diverse wildlife, and a network of trails for hiking and biking. The preserve features Eucalyptus groves, coastal sage scrub, grasslands, and habitats for birds and other wildlife. It is also home of the Monarch Butterfly Habitat.
There is currently preservation work going on within the butterfly grove including trail work, erosion control, and wildfire risk reduction. Please respect all detour signs to ensure everyone's safety. Watch for large branches that pose a risk of falling. Eroded bluffs and trails are a part of the beauty of Ellwood Mesa. Stay on trails and avoid the bluff edge. Stay off closed trails and out of work zones.
The hike starts at the parking lot and heads down towards the bluffs. We'll then walk along the bluffs, eventually make our way up towards the butterfly groves and follow them back to our starting point. Please be sure to bring water, sun protection, layered clothing, and good footwear. Carpooling is encouraged. Lunch afterwards.
