Hack for LA Civic Tech Volunteer Intro and ONBOARDING (online)

Details

We are volunteers coming together to make LA better for everyone!
We are a group of designers, developers, product managers, and non-technical community activists. We're both experts and learners, so you can flex your skills or learn new ones while giving back at the same time!

ATTENTION: HackforLA has temporarily paused the issuance of volunteer offer letters for visa and post-graduation work/volunteer hour requirement. Please fill out this Offer Letter Interest List form, so that we can notify you once we start again.
HackforLA will continue to provide supervisor evaluation reports for volunteer hours needed for school/college/university courses. These are generally provided near the end of course. These are provided on a case by case basis. Not all uses will be appropriate for Hack for LA.

FAQ:
Q: I don't live in Los Angeles, can I still volunteer?
A: Hack for LA is a global organization with volunteers from all over the world. However, a prerequisite for joining our onboarding, is that you have reviewed any civic tech volunteering opportunities in your own community before joining Hack for LA. Please see the following resources:
Volunteering in USA (Civic Tech volunteering in USA spreadsheet)
Volunteering outside the USA (https://codeforall.org/our-global-network)
Q: This meetup seems quite long, can I do it in two sessions?
A: Yes, and during the meetup we will tell you how you can come back for part 2, if your schedule requires or you just want to think about being a member after you have completed part 1.
Q: I heard this meeting was longer than 1.5 hours, is that true?
A: Depends; It can be as short as 1.5 hours and as long as 3. If you have no trouble following the instructions during the onboarding, it will be as short as 1.5 hours, if you need assistance, it will be up to 3 hours. But at 3 hours we end it no matter what.
Q: Does membership cost money?
A: No, we don't charge any membership fees or ask our members for money. Although there is a donation button on our website should you want to contribute, but its not a requirement.
Q: Will I get matched with a project
A: Depends; some roles get matched during this meetup and some roles have to do self placement based on openings on teams.
Q: I heard you switched to a webinar model from an in person zoom meeting.
A: Yes, however, it's still very interactive. We use the first 40 minutes and several (secret) techniques to weed out the potential bombers. We did this because we were getting zoom bombed very hard. We tried every lock down setting that Zoom allows but the bombers were still disruptive. So we moved to the webinar model.
Q: I got kicked out of the session, now what?
A: Attend next week. We recommend you attend again and pay closer attention when we ask you for information. See the answer above (about zoom bombing) about why we can't be more accommodating.
Q: What is Hack for LA's GitHub?
A: github.com/hackforla
