Makerspace - mak·er·space
A place in which people with shared interests, especially in computing or technology, can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge.

Have you been searching for someplace to go when you're not at work or at home? Do you want to learn new skills, pursue creative projects, or just meet and collaborate with other people from your community? Need a space that's accessible 24/7? HackPGH is the place for you!

THE 2024 HACKPGH OPEN HOUSE

WHEN: Saturday, September 21st from 1:00pm to 5:00pm

ABOUT: Whether you've never heard of us or you attended a tour years ago and decided we didn't have the resources you needed: now is the time to visit our makerspace and see what we're all about! No registration necessary, just bring yourself! Light refreshments will be served.

Shop Leads will be stationed throughout the space to demonstrate equipment and answer questions. HackPGH Board Members are available to help sign you up for classes or new memberships. Attendees of the Open House are eligible for a 25% discount off their first month or annual membership!

WHERE: We are based in the basement level of our building at 1936 Fifth Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Our primary entrance is on Jumonville Street, with a second entrance on Watson Street. Look for the signs! See map image for information on parking and nearby bus stops. There is free street parking on both sides of Jumonville and the fenced side of Watson. We have a small (2-3 cars) lot off Watson, and an overflow lot is available for this event in front of the building off Fifth Avenue.

WHAT'S NEW AT HACKPGH?
Over the past year, HackPGH has completely revitalized every Shop Area with new equipment, organization & layouts, tools, classes, and much more! Here's just a small taste of the updates to our shop:

  • Woodshop & CNC Router: New belt/disc sander, track saw, power and hand tools, organized storage, and large raised assembly table space.
  • Welding Bench: New TIG welder, mag drill, and new gear for all sizes
  • Machining: Refurbished Bridgeport mill, South Bend lathe, new tool chests, chop saw, and hardware
  • 3D Printing: Four new 3D printers (two with AMS, one with multiple extruders) and a newly updated SLA station with wash machines
  • Laser cutter: New 100w tube, chiller, alignment laser dot, and auxiliary systems failsafe
  • Electronics Bench: New digital and programmable bench power supply, new ESD mat kits
  • IT & Computer Lab: Seven new gaming computers, including four new "lab" PCs with large curved monitors, a dedicated Soft Arts laptop, and a new Slicer PC for the 3D print farm. Our software collection includes Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft 365, the Steam Master Collection, Cricut Access, Hatch Digitizer 3, VCarve Pro, Autodesk Fusion 360, and much more.
  • Gaming & Entertainment: We're set up for board games, LAN parties, movie nights, and everything in between! We have several video game consoles, an Oculus Rift 2 VR kit, 65" LED smart TV with sound bar and subwoofer, and a Bluetooth/WiFi smart projector with 120" pull-down screen.
  • Soft Arts: Ten new thread arts machines including three embroidery machines, two sergers, an industrial leather sewing machine, and more. For general crafting, there's two new vinyl cutters with easy heat presses, airbrush kit, wood burning kit, and all the thread, haberdashery, and support accessories you could ever need
  • Jewelry-Making: In early 2024, we added a jewelry workbench and cabinet featuring four professional grade flex shaft units, one of which is a Foredom with foot pedal that provides variable speed control. There's also a Dremel 4300 kit, and four fully-stocked Rio Grande student tool kits.

This barely scratches the surface of the equipment and resources we have to offer. So come to HackPGH Open House and see everything for yourself! See you then!
